VG30DETT Swap, Twin Turbo Z31

This question comes up so often it deserves its own spot: "Can I put a VG30DETT into my Z31?"

The truth? Sure, Put it in the hatch. Just kidding, Yes this can be done and actually was kind of done in japan factory in the Nissan 300ZR model, Though it was a Normally Asperated VG30DE engine the basics are there.

Before you start, you should have already located a parts car (recommended) or gathered everything needed for the conversion. Sourcing all the little pieces is often the biggest challenge!

Here’s what you’ll need to convert an Z31 to VG30DE(TT).:

Main Parts List

  • VG30DE(TT) Engine Full
  • Z32 VG30DE(TT) Wiring Harness
  • Z32 ECU
  • Z32 Motor Mounts
  • Z31 Non Turbo Crossmember
  • Z32 Transmission
  • Z32 Flywheel and clutch set

Full Write-up Coming Soon

This swap isn't for the faint of heart. Though it's been done before, not much information has been shared. Here are the tips I can provide at this time:

  • The Z32 oil pan will need to be modified to clear the steering rack on the Z31. The sump has a hammerhead shape and hits the rack mounting location on the Z31 crossmember.
  • For motor mounts, use the Z32 upper section. Where the rubber is, you'll need to fabricate a short solid portion to lower the engine for clearance.
  • You will need a custom driveshaft to connect the Z32 transmission to the Z31 differential.
  • Exhaust will also need to be custom made.

As for wiring, please see the VG30DE(TT) and RBxxDE(TT) Wiring guide .

Crossmember replacement

Replacement of the front crossmember is needed if you are not planning on using a turbo relocation pipe, as the turbo sits where the non-turbo left motor mount is located. This is easily done by jacking the car up along the frame rails (with the engine removed) and supporting it with jack stands. Next, remove the four (4) 10mm bolts that hold the power steering and AC lines to the crossmember.

Once these are removed, disconnect the control arms by removing the 22mm nut and bolt holding them to the crossmember. These could be tight or seized in the control arm bushing, so you may need to use some penetrating oil.

Now that the control arms are disconnected, you can disconnect the steering rack mounts by removing the four (4) 14mm bolts holding the straps to the crossmember. Make sure you do not mix up the sides, as they are different for the shape of the rack bushings.

Finally, secure the steering rack on a jack stand so it does not move, and then remove the four (4) 17mm nuts holding the crossmember to the chassis of the Z31.
