S30 Decoding your Vin

Each S30 has a number of information plates located in various locations. They range from the firewall to the door frame. Below you will find how to read these plates and what they mean.

S30 Zcar chassis prefix?s and what they mean

There seems to be much confusion regarding what the S30 Chassis perfixe's mean. I would like to state that, the information contained on this page is not necessarily correct. While I will do my best to present this information as accurately as possible, I would appreciate any experts on the subject to correct any wrong doings or errors I may have made.

American Market

  • HLS30 - Datsun 240z fitted with an L24 Engine and with build dates starting in 1969. L signifies the left hand drive version.
  • RLS30 - Datsun 260z fitted with an L26 Engine, build dates began in 1974.
  • GRLS30 - Datsun 260z 2+2 fitted with an L26 engine and 2 additional seats. Left hand drive.
  • HLS30 - Datsun 280z also used the HLS30 but much later sequence of chassis numbers. Fitted with L-Jetronic Injection and larger US required 5mph safety bumpers.

Australian & European Market

  • HS30 - The chassis prefix used on the Datsun 240z. I believe the first 240z in the country was HS30 - 0004. Fitted with an L24 Engine and available in both 5 speed and Automatic. Build dates started in 1970 despite some claims that there were 1969 models.
  • RS30 - The chassis prefix as used on the Datsun 260z 2 seater version only. Fitted with the L26 engine a stroked version of the L24.
  • GRS30 - The chassis prefix as used on the Datsun 260z 2+2. The G signifies the fact that it was a 4 seater version. Fitted with the L26 a stroked version of the L24. Production ran until late 1977.

On the S30 the VIN number or car serial number, is located in two(2) places. First on the left most edge of the dashboard and on the firewall above the brake boster.

It can be read as follows:
